Basic education
Basic education is one of the most effective investments in improving economies and creating literate, self-reliant and healthy societies. In the last decade, access to primary education has improved significantly in many parts of the world. Yet, 77 million children of primary school-age, 49 percent of them in sub-Saharan Africa, are not in school and 57 percent of them are girls (UNESCO EFA, 2007). Governments aiming to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on education are increasingly faced with the need to identify and prioritise different educational policies within different national contexts.
Food for Education (FFE) programs provide school feeding (school meals or snacks) and/or take-home rations to support equitable access to education among the most vulnerable and food-insecure population groups of assisted countries.
Achieving universal primary education, is a main driving force behind today's Food for Education interventions and one of the keys to achieving sustainable development.
International agencies, national governments, non governmental organizations and the civil society are joining efforts all over the world to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. School feeding programmes are increasingly present in regional, national and local development frameworks and poverty reduction strategies.
